Frequently Asked Questions
There is no typical counselling session.
It is time set aside for you, and what you talk about will vary according to your needs.
You are free to discuss what you wish to, from everyday events, dilemmas, feelings, thoughts, regrets, aspirations, memories and dreams.
Your therapy will provide a safe environment in which to explore your issues and work towards self-improvement.
If you prefer to approach your issues in a more practical way, then there will be practical tools and exercises to help you on this journey
It helps if you have clear ideas and goals of what you want from therapy, and come to therapy prepared to work on these
Your therapist will often just listen as you tell your story, and also ask questions to help you to explore and resolve the issues that you have agreed to deal with
Clients present with wide-ranging problems including:
- anxiety (panic attacks, agoraphobia, generalised anxiety problems, social anxiety, claustrophobia)
- stress in the work place, work-life imbalances
- relationship issues (break-up, divorce, affairs, choosing inappropriate partners, loneliness, life adjustments, marital problems, arguments, jealousy, wedding & premarital counselling)
- obsessive-compulsive and other personality disorders
- eating problems (including bulimia, binge-eating, negative body image)
- depression (including suicidal thoughts, low mood, social withdrawal)
- phobias & fears
- Borderline Personality Disorder, or difficulty managing emotions and distress
- low-self esteem & confidence
- trauma and childhood abuse issues
But there is no typical issue and everybody has individual issues. Please ask if you are unsure about whether we can support you with whatever you need to bring
The number of counselling sessions depends on you as an individual and your unique presenting issues.
A first consultation will enable you to see if counselling is indicated and whether we feel comfortable working together.
Usually you will start with 10 sessions and review after that. There is no actual limit to the number of sessions but clients will be expected to make progress towards their goals at whatever pace is right for them.
The therapist will take payment in full at the beginning or end of each session by cash or cheque.
It is possible to pay by direct bank transfer if you prefer this option
You will be expected to pay for any missed or cancelled sessions unless another client takes your place. All individual therapy sessions will cost £40 per hour. Discounts and Special Offers are sometimes available HERE .
Friends, family and colleagues may be very concerned about an individual's well being and would like to see them have counselling. It is OK for them to make initial contact to enquire about what I do and ensure the service can meet the person's needs.
It is most helpful if the individual in question can make contact themselves, as it is an important step in acknowledging that they may need assistance. We are able to take enquiries from you on behalf of someone else, but you should have their full consent and therapy cannot begin without their full consent.
Even if you refer someone else for counselling, their sessions are completely confidential and you will not be able to sit in on private sessions.
